This special Black History Month discussion and book signing with anthropologist and author Yolanda Covington-Ward will examine her book Gesture and Power: Religion, Nationalism, and Everyday Performance in Congo and review common themes from the History Center's award-winning From Slavery to Freedom exhibition. Her lecture will explore the extent in which traditional practices and performances of the BisiKongo people of Lower Congo show how their gestures, dances, and spirituality are critical in mobilizing social and political action.
